History
1959: St. Pius X Church Develops A School
Archbishop Urban J. Vehr dedicated St. Pius X Church on 16 June 1956. In addition to the initial beginnings of the Parish Community, pioneering Pastor Father Francis J. Syrianey directed the construction of a new school. In April 1959, St. Pius X Catholic Church launched the school fund drive. With the hanging of soundproofing drapes between classrooms in the church basement, classes officially began in the Fall of 1960.
The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati sent two sisters to staff the new school, the principal, Sister John Ann, and Sister Joan. The two sisters in addition to three lay teachers taught 160 students in Grades Four through Eight. Classes were held in the temporary church basement facility while awaiting completion of the convent/school building.
1961: St. Pius X School's New Facilities and Early Leadership
A new school building opened its doors for the 1961-1962 school year. 350 students in Grades one through eight were welcomed into the new building, now staffed by four sisters and five lay teachers. During this time, school uniforms were introduced. With the new facility, enrollment increased resulting in an additional construction on the young campus. A new wing was added to the original building consisting of four classrooms, a library and a large multi-purpose room. The new wing was used for the first time in 1965.
The first four principals of the school were all members of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. Following Sister John Ann (1960-1965) were Sister Barbara Ann (1965-1968), Sister Laetitia Ann (1968-1969) and Sister Zita Burke (1969-1974).
Seton Learning Center
Under the leadership of Sister Zita Burke, the Seton Learning Center was established to accommodate students with learning disabilities. The Seton Learning Center was based upon a concept of mainstreaming which subscribes to a theory that a child could maintain peer identity while receiving special attention needed. The center was located on the third floor of the school in the convent wing. While the location and name of the learning center has changed since it was originally established, the present-day Learning Lab continues to provide aid to students in need of individual assistance.
