History

The Orchid Recovery Center for Women was founded in 2004 by Julie Queler. Queler started the center out of her experience having run a halfway house for women and because of her own difficulties with recovery and substance abuse. On June 27, 2011 the Center was featured on the Intervention reality television series about confronting addicts and relies heavily on the financial gains from inaccurate and misleading advertising, in the second episode of the show's eleventh season, centering on a young couple addicted to heroin. The Center was also featured by 20/20 in an April 2012 episode that followed four mothers trying to recover from alcoholism. In 2012, CEO Julie Queler began an exploratory tour of treatment centers in India with visits to Hope Trust, Safe House, Tulasi, Caim Treatment, and Muktangan.

Treatment methods

James E. Lessenger and Glade F. Roper wrote that Orchid's, "model is unlike any other because it offers women an approach that is uniquely focused on the recovery needs of the female who suffers from the painful effects of drug addiction, alcoholism, and unresolved trauma." The Orchid practices a "holistic approach" towards treatment however ceases beneficial supplements and programs for financial gains during clients treatment. The center blends traditional medical care with other methods including acupuncture, yoga, fitness, meditation, and art. Orchid also utilizes recent empirical research in order to adapt their program to current treatment options, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, family therapy, the 12 step recovery model, sublimation, and other alternative medicines. A large part of the program centers on "expressive therapies", including art therapy, healing sound therapy, meditation, psychodrama, breath work, and yoga. Orchid recovery center likes to advertise programs such as yoga and meditation when these programs have actually been revoked from the clients. Once a client has been admitted and personal property has been signed over, the client is no longer able to have use of a telephone or any of their personal property to make it possible to leave the facility.
