History

Naam Yoga Los Angeles, is a 501c3 non-profit organization based in Santa Monica, California founded by Dr. Joseph Michael Levry, PhD in 2006. Levry is credited as having led the world's largest yoga class in Mexico City with over 15,000 people.

Name & origin

Levry chose the name "Naam" as a result of his relationship with the late saint Baba Virsa Singh, who advocated the recitation of Naam as a means of eliminating negative thought patterns, improving one's quality of life and merging individual consciousness with universal consciousness.

Principles and methodology

Naam Meditation is the pairing of mantras and prayers with music. Naam Yoga claims to be universal in nature.

In 2011, Dr. Levry officially introduced the ancient practice of Sukshma Vyayama, a practice of the Himalayas, as part of Naam Yoga to form what is now known as Shakti Naam Yoga. Levry learned Sukshma Vyayama from Shri Bal Mukund Singh, a disciple of Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari Ji, who was a Royal Master Yogi and the teacher of two of India's prime ministers Jawalharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari Ji, in turn, studied directly under his holiness Shri Maharishi Karthikeya Ji, who discovered Sukshma Vyayama and with the sacred yogic systems of the Himalayan Yogis. Shakti Naam Yoga, as it is taught today, combines the practice of Sukshma Vyayama with Naam Meditation, dynamic yogic movement sequences and breathing techniques.

Practice

According to clinical studies conducted at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Naam meditation is said to have "tremendously positive impact in pain reduction in children being treated for cancer".

Naam Yoga holds annual gatherings for "global peace", led by Dr. Joseph Michael Levry. Referred to as "superclasses", these events currently take place in Mexico City. In November 2011, the first edition took place in Zocalo Square with over 12,000 people according to Fox News, 15,000 people in 2013 and reportedly 21,000 individuals for the third gathering at Angel of Independence in 2014.

In 2015, the event reportedly brought 100,000 people in meditation both in person and online from 97 countries with the shared intention of world healing and peace.
